Smores anyone?

I had the best time growing up when we could go camping. To put the business of school, work or any other stress aside and just be free. We would sit around the campfire late at night and not only talk about the things we had done on that particular day but, we would tell stories. Stories of past childhoods, experiences that we ourselves lived or ones we were able to relive through the person telling the story.
As I remember those times I think about the thousands of years that other people, other civilizations also sat around their campfires and told their stories and experiences. It was how they passed on their peoples history, their culture, the memories of their existence. What has changed? We still tell stories. We stay up late and even sit around a campfire(propane or wood). We tell and retell the history of our lives and the lives of others.
The change to the story telling is the imagination factor. Where once we had to envision a picture in our minds as to the colours, sites, sounds and smells that the story teller might have experienced. Now, the story teller can broadcast their reality into our imagination making the two become one.
Look at a few sites that will give you a better perspective into digital storytelling.

The 7 elements of digital storytelling.

We are trying to create a learning environment incorporating how we used to teach(past tense) and how we should be teaching(present) to educate our 21st century students. Using digital storytelling does just that. It links the past with the present and tells a story for future generations. I feel that this method of learning and teaching is very important especially in today's world. It can give any school a tool for learning that wasn't there before.
I guess that sitting around a campfire telling stories might just mean having a HD projector and digital audio/video device. You can always use the side of the tent for a screen.(don't forget the smores)
